CSMA k-SIC - A class of distributed MAC protocols and their performance evaluation

چکیده
The CSMA/CA protocol is based on the “Interference as Noise” (IAN) paradigm i.e. it always gets rid of strong interference near a receiver to ensure quality of reception. However, it is well known from Multi-user Information Theory that treating Interference as Noise is not optimal. This paper proposes a class of protocols that employ the Successive Interference Cancellation (SIC) technique in a systematic fashion to move beyond always treating interference as noise. Such protocols allow one to pack more links than the classical CSMA. We describe the protocols along with their signaling mechanism to implement them in a distributed fashion. We then perform Monte Carlo simulations to evaluate the performance and show significant gains over the IAN based CSMA/CA protocol in large random networks.

1-Persistent Collision-Free CSMA Protocols for Opportunistic Optical Hyperchannels
Recently, a new WDM optical network infrastructure named SMART [1], which is capable of dynamically setting up, modifying, and tearing down optical connections, was proposed. The performance of SMART is determined by the performance of its hyperchannels, which are essentially optical buses or light-trails. Previously proposed MAC protocols for unidirectional optical buses can be used as distrib...
متن کاملDesign and Performance Evaluation of Scheduling Algorithms for Unslotted CSMA/CA with Backoff MAC Protocols in Multiple-Access WDM Ring Networks
The unslotted Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Avoidance (CSMA/CA) with backoff is a fully distributed, asynchronous Media Access Control (MAC) protocol for multiple-access Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) ring networks with simplicity and robustness comparable to those of Ethernet [1], [2]. In this paper we present the results of performance evaluation of four scheduling algo...
متن کاملA new class of collision prevention MAC protocols for wireless ad hoc networks
In this paper, we investigate a new class of collisionprevention MAC protocols, called Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Prevention (CSMA/CP), for wireless ad hoc networks. We propose a collision-free MAC protocol called BROADEN based on CSMA/CP. To the best of our knowledge, BROADEN is the first distributed MAC protocol that can achieve 100% collision-free transmissions in both the ...
متن کاملA Result on Hybrid Scheduling in Wireless Networks
Medium access control is an exceedingly important aspect of the operation of any network. This is particularly true in wireless settings where the broadcast nature of the medium accentuates the need for effective medium access algorithms which provide good throughput and fairness characteristics. By far the most popular MAC techniques for wireless networks are those based on Carrier Sense Multi...
متن کاملMIMO Network Coding-Based PHY/MAC Protocol for Replacement of CSMA/CA in Efficient Two-Way Multihop Relay Networks
Backbone wireless mesh networks have attracted much of attention due to their wide-range applications. The use of CSMA/CA based MAC protocols in mesh networks, however, leads to an inefficient resource utilization, and to high latency. Several alternative protocols including directional MAC, multichannel MAC only provide marginal improvement. Recently, a cross-layer design employing multiple an...
